From first call to follow-up test: how it works

It starts with a test. If your long-term result is above Health Canada (opens in a new tab)'s guideline of 200 Bq/m³, we give you a quote. If you go ahead, we put the system in. A 91-day lab test comes with it, to check your number came down.

If your result isn't above the guideline, there's no system to quote, and you stop after step 3. A long-term test runs at least 91 days, so that's the longest wait.

Step 1: you call or send us your result

Call or send your result

Call or text us at 519-991-8180, or use the form. The form asks for your address, and your result if you have one. Our hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Saturday by appointment.

How fast we reply

We answer every call and form message ourselves, within 24 hours.

Already tested?

If you've already tested with a kit or a library monitor, tell us the number and how long the test ran. We'll quote from it, with no retest needed for the quote. If it was a short test, Health Canada still says to base the decision on a long-term one.

Step 2: we mail you a radon test

How the test by mail works

After you send us a message, we call you to set it up. We mail you a detector, and when the test is done, you mail it back for the lab.

How our test by mail works

Where the detector goes

You place the detector yourself, following our instructions and Health Canada's placement guidance.

The device goes on the lowest level of your home that you live on, in a room someone uses more than 4 hours a day. It sits at least 1 m from vents, windows and doors, and it stays for at least 91 days, best during the heating season.

The detector we use

We use an alpha track detector, and an independent lab reads it. The test is $300 plus HST. That covers the detector, shipping both ways, the lab fees and a written result.

Buying or selling?

We don't do short-term tests for a sale. We recommend a long-term test of at least 91 days, as Health Canada does. If you're buying or selling, see how testing fits a sale.

Where to put a radon testA radon test sits on a bookshelf in a family room on the lowest level of a home, off the floor and more than a metre from the door, the window and the floor vent.12

  2. 2At least 1 m from doors, windows and vents.

Step 3: you get your number and what it means

We email you the written result, then call to go over it with you. How long the result takes depends on the mail getting the detector to the lab.

Health Canada's guideline is 200 Bq/m³. If your number isn't above it, there's no system to sell you, and we'll tell you so.

What your number means. What to do if it's high.

Step 4: if your number is high, we give you a quote

How the quote happens

Every quote comes after a visit. The in-home assessment and the written quote are free. We send the quote by email, and it's good for 30 days.

It names the openings we'll seal, like sump pits, backwater valves, floor drains and major cracks.

Step 5: if you go ahead, we put the system in

An install takes about half a day. Our radon professional or his crew does the work.

Before we come, clear the basement and the work area. Most often the pipe vents out through a basement wall. Expect noise, dust, drilling and a smell from the polyurethane. Every system gets a manometer. The gauge on the pipe shows the suction the fan makes, not your radon level. Only a test shows that.

What install day looks like.

Step 6: the system gets tested to check it worked

The test that comes with your system

A 91-day lab test is included with every system. Every system we put in is designed with a target of below 100 Bq/m³, well below Health Canada's guideline of 200.

If it's still high

If your results come back higher than expected, we come back, check the system and work to bring your levels down.

Your own tests after that

C-NRPP (opens in a new tab) also suggests your own long-term test in the next heating season. After that, Health Canada says to test again every 5 years.

Our lowest result after a system

Our lowest result after a system went in, in a Windsor-Essex home, came back as 15 Bq/m³ or less. The lab doesn't report an exact number below that. Any result at or below 15 comes back as "15 or less".

Every system we put in is designed with a target of below 100 Bq/m³, well below Health Canada's guideline of 200.
