Got a high radon result? Here's what it means

If your long-term result is above 200 Bq/m³, it's over Health Canada (opens in a new tab)'s guideline. Health Canada (opens in a new tab) says to fix it within a year, and sooner the higher it is. If it was a short test, confirm it with a long one first.

Health Canada (opens in a new tab) says the risk from radon is long-term, not immediate, so you've got time to plan a fix. The most common fix is a radon system, and we can tell you what that would look like for yours. We'll quote a fix from a kit or library result, with no retest needed for the quote. If it was a short test, Health Canada (opens in a new tab) still says to base the decision on a long-term one.

Is my number above the guideline?

Health Canada's guideline is 200 Bq/m³. If your yearly average is above it, Health Canada says to fix it.

Check the units first. Some kits and monitors show pCi/L instead of Bq/m³. 1 pCi/L is 37 Bq/m³, so 200 Bq/m³ is about 5.4 pCi/L.

What your radon number means covers the rest of the scale.

Was it a short test or a long test?

A long-term test runs at least 91 days. Health Canada says to base the decision to fix on a test that long.

A high short test tells you to look closer. A long test tells you whether to fix it.

Tested during a home sale? Buying or selling covers testing around a sale. For test types in general, see short vs long radon tests.

How soon should I fix it?

You've got time to plan it. Health Canada says within a year if your long-term result is above 200 Bq/m³, and sooner if the number's higher.

What brings radon down?

The most common fix

The most common fix is sub-slab depressurization. That's a pipe through the basement floor and a small fan that pulls radon from under the house and vents it outside. How a radon system works has the details.

Does sealing cracks help?

Sealing cracks helps, but Health Canada says that on its own, it only does so much (see does sealing cracks work?).

Does an HRV help?

A balanced HRV that runs all the time can lower radon by about 20 to 50%. That's less than a radon system (see radon and HRVs). We don't work on HRVs ourselves.

Use a certified pro

Health Canada recommends a C-NRPP (opens in a new tab) certified mitigation professional. Our radon professional is C-NRPP certified for residential radon measurement and residential mitigation. The certificate numbers and the link to check them are on About us.

What will a fix cost?

A typical radon system

From $3,000 plus HST

Already have a radon rough-in? Turning it into a working system starts at $2,600 plus HST when there's no sump pump.

We always quote after a visit. There's no charge for the in-home assessment or the written quote. We email the quote, and it's good for 30 days.

What moves a job up or down: access, how far the pipe runs to where it vents, crawlspaces, and the age of the sump pump. Health Canada says radon can be lowered "at a cost similar to other common home improvements." More on our prices page.

How will I know the fix worked?

Every system we put in comes with a 91-day lab test after the install, and each one is designed with a target of below 100 Bq/m³, well below Health Canada's guideline of 200. If your results come back higher than expected, we come back, check the system and work to bring your levels down.

C-NRPP also suggests your own long-term test in the next heating season. How it works has every step.

Our lowest result after a system went in came back as 15 Bq/m³ or less, the lowest the lab reports. About that result.

How common is a high number around here?

You're far from the only one. In the health unit's 2015 to 2018 study (opens in a new tab), 11% of the Windsor-Essex homes tested were above 200 Bq/m³: 18% in Essex County and 6% in the City of Windsor.

Every local number and its source is on radon in Windsor-Essex.
