Common radon questions

An older couple reading answers together at the dining table.

Should I test my home for radon?

How do I test, and how long does it take?

How long does a radon test take?

Health Canada says a long-term test runs at least 91 days. A short test gives a quicker look. Our test is long-term. Our guide covers which one fits.

Can you mail me a radon test?

Yes, that's how our test works. We mail you a detector, you mail it back, and we send it to an independent lab. It's $300 plus HST, with shipping both ways included. How our test by mail works.

Should I use a kit or have a professional test?

A long-term kit, run for at least 91 days, gives you a number you can compare with the guideline. Our long-term test comes by mail. It's $300 plus HST and covers the detector, shipping both ways, the lab fees and a written result. If you already have a kit or library result, we'll quote from it, with no retest needed for the quote. If it was a short test, Health Canada still says to base the decision on a long-term one. Compare your testing options.

What does my radon number mean?

What's a safe radon level?

Health Canada's guideline is 200 Bq/m³. If a long-term test comes back above it, Health Canada says to fix it within a year, and sooner the higher it is. What your number means.

My neighbour's result was low. Am I fine?

Not for sure. Health Canada says radon levels vary from one house to another, even next door. See the local numbers.

How does a radon system work, and what does it cost?

Does sealing cracks fix radon?

It can help, but Health Canada says how much depends on how high your level is and on the house itself. What sealing can and can't do.

How do I know a system worked?

A 91-day lab test after the install comes with every system. Every system we put in is designed with a target of below 100 Bq/m³, well below Health Canada's guideline of 200. If your results come back higher than expected, we come back, check the system and work to bring your levels down. C-NRPP (opens in a new tab) also suggests your own long-term test in the next heating season. How it works, step by step.

I already have a radon system. Can you check it?

Yes. We service, repair and retest systems other installers put in, from $300 plus HST. See our prices.

What about buying, selling, renting or building?

Who are you, and where do you work?

How can I check you're certified?

Our radon professional's certificate numbers are on our About page, with links to C-NRPP's Certification Check and our CRSI listing.
