Where to get a radon test kit in Windsor-Essex

The health unit says you can buy a long-term radon test kit at local hardware stores or online, including through Take Action on Radon (opens in a new tab). A long-term kit costs about $50, and kits with lab fees run $30 to $80. A long-term kit runs at least 91 days and gives the number Health Canada (opens in a new tab)'s guideline uses.

Essex County Library (opens in a new tab) lends a digital radon monitor for up to 3 weeks, usually in the colder months. It's a short look, not a long-term test.

A hardware store aisle.

Can you borrow a radon monitor from the library?

Loans are 3 weeks with no renewals, and the monitor goes back in person, not in the book drop. The library says the program usually runs November to April.

A short look can tell you if levels seem high or low right now. It can't give you the yearly average the guideline uses. Short or long radon test explains why.

We haven't confirmed whether City of Windsor residents can borrow one.

Where can you buy a long-term radon test kit?

The health unit says local hardware stores and online sellers carry them, and it points people to Take Action on Radon to order one. It doesn't give out or sell kits itself.

Pick a long-term kit (91 days or more) with the lab fee included. Kits made for the US show results in pCi/L, and What is a safe radon level? shows how to convert them.

Thinking about a digital monitor instead? C-NRPP (opens in a new tab)'s list of consumer radon monitors (opens in a new tab) shows which ones passed its tests. Short or long radon test covers how a monitor can give you a long-term result.

The digital monitors we like are the Ecosense EcoBlu (opens in a new tab) and EcoQube (opens in a new tab), the Airthings Corentium Home 2 (opens in a new tab) and View Plus (opens in a new tab), and the Aranet Radon Plus (Aranet RN+). The links go to Amazon.ca, and we don't earn anything from them.

If you already have a digital monitor, find it in the Index's device checker (opens in a new tab) to see if C-NRPP lists it and whether it's been recalled.

When does a professional test fit better?

A lab test and a written result

You want a certified professional to supply the detector, get it to an independent lab and give you a written result. Our test by mail does that, and we call to go over the result with you. How our test by mail works.

Buying or selling

You're buying or selling. Buying or selling covers how testing fits a sale.

After a system goes in

You've just had a radon system put in. If we put it in, a 91-day lab test after the install is included. Every system we put in is designed with a target of below 100 Bq/m³, well below Health Canada (opens in a new tab)'s guideline of 200. If another installer put it in, we retest it, from $300 plus HST. C-NRPP also suggests your own long-term test in the next heating season.

How it works

Our radon professional is C-NRPP certified for residential radon measurement and residential mitigation, and you can check that on C-NRPP's registry (opens in a new tab). Our long-term test comes by mail for $300 plus HST, and Prices has the rest.

Does Windsor Radon sell or lend test kits?

We don't lend monitors. What we offer is our test by mail. Like a long-term kit, it runs at least 91 days. The difference is that our certified radon professional handles the rest. We mail you the detector, send it to an independent lab when you mail it back, and go over the result with you.

Our test by mail

$300 plus HST, with shipping both ways included. It uses an alpha track detector (or dosimeter), and you get a written result by email.

How our test by mail works

What do you do with your result?

What is a safe radon level? explains what your number means next to Health Canada's guideline of 200 Bq/m³. If it's above 200, My result is high covers what to do next.

Already have a result from a kit or a library monitor? We'll quote a system from it after a free visit. Health Canada says to decide on a fix from a long-term test of at least 91 days, so if yours was a short look, a long-term test is the next step before you decide.
